Under contract with the UK MOD, the QinetiQ Wales UAS Environment continues to enable the Test and Evaluation of the Watchkeeper Unmanned Aerial System, providing the UK armed forces with an all-weather ISTAR capability.
Drawing on the excellent infrastructure and facilities available at MOD Aberporth Range, the environment enables the flight test and evaluation of the Watchkeeper UAS operated by the UK MOD and Prime Contractor Thales. Further enabled commercial facilities support the Watchkeeper Ground Test Qualification elements, ensuring that the QinetiQ Wales UAs Environment delivers against the totality of the Programme needs.
The Wales UAS Environment provides access to numerous subject matter experts such as Trial Conducting Officers, Range Controllers, Air Traffic Controllers, Trial Safety Managers, In-Flight Safety Officers, Project Managers, and Engineering Managers to deliver the necessary facilities and capabilities on a daily basis in a safe and effective manner. To enable further qualification evidence, we provide facilities and SMEs for the Watchkeeper ground qualification programme, including Electromagnetic Compatibility assessment, EMC, Environmental testing, Trundle, Shock and Vibration and Radio Frequency Environmental Generator facilities.
QinetiQ development of the Wales UAS Environment was key to securing the Watchkeeper T&E programme whilst also providing a UK UAS environment that would benefit from existing capabilities, infrastructure and subject matter expertise.
The Wales UAS Environment continues to front the development of UK capability to support UAS, recently invested in enhanced facilities and capability further up the Welsh coastline at Snowdonia Aerospace Centre. This has direct access to the already enabled infrastructure and the investment enables the MOD, industry, the UK, and QinetiQ to remain at the forefront of UAS development.
